It was on this night that 33 young entrepreneurs from 10 different countries were recognized by NFTE as this year’s “Global Young Entrepreneurs of the Year.” With businesses ranging from fire-resistant vests for chefs to the business of tea culture and products, each business was more intriguing than the next and behind them all were the conceptions, dreams, and hard work of those who pursued their entrepreneurial goal.

What motivates these young people to keeping believing in and being inspired by an entrepreneurial dream? Many NFTE kids make their first entrée into the business world through us, thus we have very big shoes to fill in helping them keep their dreams alive. We like to continually provide them with resources that will guide them towards the next milestone that develops their business. In part two of this article, we’ll be discussing some of these resources Office Project Key, including our newest, most exciting effort to date: www.MakeYourJob.org, which will be released in mid-May and will be accessible to all kids around the world and across socioeconomic lines.

But what we’d like to first discuss — and pay tribute to — are the many meaningful ways NFTE kids have access to one-on-one support through our teachers and our supporters. Who can possibly build a successful business without knowing there are people behind them who believe in their effort?

At NFTE, we stand on the shoulders of giants — our foundation’s supporters — who not only provide us with the funds to help kids Cheap windows 7 key, but are there to nurture them and share in the joy of their development as students and entrepreneurs. Imagine being handed a college scholarship from Ernst & Young directly from the firm’s own president and CEO Jim Turley. NFTE student and Global Young Entrepreneur of the Year Stephanie Foxworth didn’t have to imagine that scene, as she was presented her award from him at our Gala and personally congratulated by our own NFTE President and CEO, Amy Rosen, who acts as mentor to all GYEY if they want it. Or how about a young entrepreneur being personally congratulated by Goldman Sachs’ Tucker York, Global Head, Private Wealth Management and NFTE Board member. Mr. York welcomed each of our entrepreneurs at the Gala and lauded their business and academic achievements. Daymond John, star of ABC’s Shark Tank, personally recognized the work of Andres Cardona, NFTE Global Young Entrepreneur of the Year from South Florida during the Gala, and inspired the crowd with his story. MasterCard’s Ron Garrow, Group Executive, Global Head Windows 7 Key, Human Resources announced each NFTE teacher and personally thanked them for their innovation and dedication to NFTE students.

Our NFTE teachers are equally inspiring to their kids, and do much of their teaching through their actions as well as classroom instructions. Our teachers act as sounding boards for their students, and are their constant mentors and cheerleaders. Teachers across the country have realized that using entrepreneurship education to motivate their students is a wonderful way to link classroom work to the creation of practical business models and real-life opportunities. And as kids get more involved in the classroom, their relationships with their teachers improve. This means more students stay in school, complete their studies and go on to post-secondary education, and quite possibly a life of entrepreneurship.

By the time anyone but me reads this, it’ll be less than a week before Camden Crawl 2012 lands. I work on this event from the late summer before it, but the toil in earnest really begins around January – and it honestly seems like yesterday since the team started work. To some extent, you just have to hope that in all the chaos and stress of the last five months, we did everything right.

I thought I might list everything that can go wrong – from schedule clashes to programme misprints – but I’d only make my night terrors worse. One good thing about returning to manage the same festival every year is that, along with all the extra grey hairs, you also get a bunch of extra experience. I feel like I know what works. This is the sort of visible stuff that, if not done properly, will be obvious to everyone – and therefore it needs to be done right. That there has been nine months of invisible work which would be as obvious if poorly done is a secret we festival managers learn to keep.

In fact, what I’ve most enjoyed about this series of blogs is the opportunity it’s given me to share thoughts which very often just stay in my head: rare is it that I talk at length about what have become intuitive things for me. If nothing else, the Huffington Post has proven to be a very inexpensive therapist. I hope you’ve got as much out of these posts as I have.

In 2011, we brought together a small group of teens from Boston-area schools to work on the issues of self-confidence, body image and the effects of the media on sense of self. With the help of the Harris Center staff, the Teen Mentors have learned to talk openly about the process of accepting oneself and one’s body. They feel supported as they ask questions that every girl faces when she builds her identity: “Am I okay?” “Am I pretty enough?” “Can I love myself the way I am?” By coming together to discuss this self-acceptance, they have begun to accomplish it.

In meetings with our staff, the Teen Mentors identify sources of stress in their communities — such as bullying and pressure to achieve at the highest level — that may contribute to negative self-image. They ask themselves, “In view of these stresses, how can we help our peers feel self-confident?” Then the girls transform their ideas into action; they work with the Harris Center staff and with each other to create eating disorder awareness projects in their own communities. That is, they learn to guide and educate their schoolmates in the area of body image and self-esteem, and through serving as mentors they strengthen their leadership skills.

On Feb. 13, 2012, four of our Teen Mentors gave a presentation to a ninth grade class. The first speakers were ninth graders Fiona and Juliet, who described the Teen Mentor Program and showed slides comparing original female media images with those that had been computer enhanced — “Photoshopped” — to look super-thin. Both girls were pleasantly surprised when one classmate after another offered comments about the pictures. It was clear and very exciting that the theme of their presentation — that ultra-thin female media images do not represent the real bodies of real women — had caught on!

Next, two senior mentors, Callie and Katy, outlined the advocacy projects they were conducting in their own schools, including plans for a “Fat Talk Free Week.” Almost in unison, the ninth graders asked, “What’s that?” And so began the seniors’ lively description of the national campaign aimed at celebrating inner beauty and at reducing comments — such as “If I could only lose 10 pounds…” and “I hate my thighs” — that have become standard fare among today’s youth. The information about “Fat Talk Free Week” sparked immediate enthusiasm from the vast majority of ninth graders, including the boys. As a result, the ninth grade is leading the school’s first “Fat Talk Free” campaign, during which Fiona and Juliet will give a presentation to the entire school, explaining what fat talk is and why it is important not to engage in it.

Katy is hard at work on her advocacy project, which will come to fruition in May 2012. She is organizing a panel discussion featuring high school students: someone who had a friend suffering from an eating disorder, an athlete, a male student. The panelists will share their perspectives on pressures that can lead to negative self-image. They will also encourage participation from the audience Tattoo Ink Supplies, which will include not only students, but parents and school faculty as well.

In addition to creating eating disorder awareness projects in their schools, our Teen Mentors engage in group discussions with prominent speakers we bring in for our Annual Public Forum on Body Image and the Media. The day before our 2012 Forum, for example, the girls met with Vogue Italia editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani, with whom they shared their thoughts on the pressures facing young women today. In response, Franca advised, “Girls, you have to be fighters. Fight to define and be recognized by your own standards of beauty, of happiness Tattoo Starter Kits, of success. But remember that you can’t do it on your own.” For our Mentors, Franca’s wisdom resonated throughout the group meeting, throughout the next day’s Forum, and beyond.

The girls offer extremely positive feedback about their program. For example, recent Teen Mentor alumna Melissa wrote, “The mentor group was a breath of fresh air for me because I could be honest about my fears, worries, and experiences. I felt it was a safe place for me to talk.”

Laura said, “The Mentor Program has given me the power and the tools to attack the lifelong damage that can be caused when girls hate their bodies.”

Our Teen Mentor Program has grown in popularity each year and we anticipate that it will become a model program. Helping high school students to feel good about themselves and empowering them to mentor their peers about the importance of self-acceptance hold the promise of improved lives for teens everywhere.

“This was the fourth year that I filled out my bracket on ESPN. And what I’ve learned is that if I make the right picks, I look like a genius. But if things go the other way, then a team like Kentucky gets to come to my house and remind me, in person, that I was wrong,” the president said, laughing. “So it is a double-edged sword.”

The Mazda3 has been a compact darling ever since its introduction in 2004, and even though its current design is nearly five years old, it still wins many comparison tests. Since its near the end of a design cycle, a new Zoom Zoom Mazda is on its way, and some interesting renderings have been published online of what the new Mazda3 could look like.
