I took a very learned friend to see the New York City Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet Tuesday night, the first of six performances. Surveying the mayhem at the end, he helpfully observed that if Juliet had only taken a sleeping potion she would still be breathing, however faintly Replica Cartier Watches, which should have been noticeable to all, thus saving a lot of bloodshed.

Happily he was not around four centuries ago to make this observation to Shakespeare because somehow, despite this lapse in logic, Romeo has always been one of the Bard’s most popular and powerful plays. Indeed in the 17th century the most well-thumbed pages of the copy of the First Folio in the library at Oxford were those of this early tragedy.

It seems ironic that in the very anti-romantic 20th century the second most popular retelling of this ultra romantic story should have been created in the ultra-anti-romantic Soviet Union, where government agencies existed to root out bourgeois tendencies in art. The most popular 20th century version, of course, West Side Story, was created right here, and the iconic album cover photograph of Larry Kert and Carol Lawrence running down a street of tenements and garbage cans was shot in the very neighborhood that was razed to create Lincoln Center, where the Peter Martins version of the Prokofiev ballet opened Tuesday night.

Prokofiev’s score is a work of soaring passion. I often wonder if Prokofiev had not been lured back to Russia in the ’30s Replica Breitling Watches, after many years of traveling in cosmopolitan Western cities, whether he would have written such popular works as Romeo, Cinderella or Peter and the Wolf. The compositions of his years in the West were avant-garde. Would he have been tempted to write works for “the masses” if he had not returned to the workers’ paradise (where his wife used to reminisce about their days in Paris while she carried buckets of slops in a gulag.)

Martins’ choreography is essentially straightforward. He delivers the moments of passion as well as the abundant moments of wit skilllfully if not with great force. Not surprisingly, some of his best and most vigorous steps are for the subsidiary male characters — Tybalt, Mercutio and Benvolio. These roles were danced with great abandon and finesse by Gonzalo Garcia, Daniel Ulbricht and Antonio Carmena.

Martins made the piece in 2007 on Sterling Hyltin as Juliet and Robert Fairchild as Romeo, who repeat their roles here. The body of the very slim Hyltin still suggests an adolescent (in the play she is 14.) This helps her convey the sense of a youth carried away by things beyond her comprehension. This emotional vulnerability underlines her elegant dancing.

Similarly, Fairchild conveys a youthful impulsiveness and audacity that give his character an emotional force far beyond the dazzling athleticism of his steps.

Veteran NYCB dancers Darci Kistler and Jock Soto were brought back to dance Juliet’s parents. It seems only yesterday that Kistler was the youngest dancer ever to join the City Ballet and the last muse to inspire Balanchine — but in fact that was 30 years ago. The roles of Lord and Lady Capulet are broadly sketched, and Kistler and Soto perform them with great charm.

The set, by Danish artist Per Kirkeby, has a cartoon quality that does not add much to the overall mood. The costumes, by Kirkeby and Kirsten Lund Nielsen, are suitably festive, especially for the children’s ballet, performed with particular verve by students of the School of American Ballet.

Clotilde Otranto conducted the oddly rearranged and truncated version of the score with great clarity. Martins may not have caught all the emotions in the score, but the story, 400 years young, has a power all its own.

It’s Baby No. 3 For Jennifer Garner And Ben Affleck

Congratulations to Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck who’ve announced that that they’re to be parents for the third time, according to People Magazine. The new addition to the family is a son, Garner giving birth in Santa Monica. The new arrival joins the pair’s daughters, six year-old Violet and three year-old Seraphina.

When Affleck first burst onto the scene, he was known almost as much for his high profile relationships as he was his burgeoning talent as an actor. He had a relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow after the star’s break up with Brad Pitt in 1998 whilst in 2002 he had another well-publicized relationship with Jennifer Lopez in 2002, even going so far as getting engaged with her to consecrate what the press had started describing as “Bennifer;” that all went sour though and they split, to much shock, in 2004.

It wasn’t long after that he started seeing his ‘Daredevil’ co-star Jennifer Garner, and the pair got married after just nine months together in 2005. Three kids in at the pair still seem inseparable almost seven ears after marrying, with Garner saying back in January “He knows when to swoop in with the gesture. He’s sweet that way. Honestly, I would do anything for that man, because I know it’s not taken for granted.”

Feb. 29 (Bloomberg) — Four former executives at General Reinsurance Corp. and one at American International Group Inc. face a Jan. 22 retrial on charges of defrauding AIG investors of as much as $597 million.

U.S. District Judge Vanessa Bryant will preside over the trial in Hartford, Connecticut, according to an order made public yesterday. On Aug. 1, the U.S. Court of Appeals in New York ordered a new trial, reversing the executives’ convictions in 2008.

Federal jurors in Hartford convicted former General Re Chief Executive Officer Ronald Ferguson, ex-Chief Financial Officer Elizabeth Monrad, ex-Senior Vice President Christopher Garand and ex-Assistant General Counsel Robert Graham. Former AIG Vice President Christian Milton also was found guilty.

Prosecutors said the fraud involved a sham transaction in 2000 and 2001 to inflate AIG’s loss reserves by $500 million. It preceded the financial crisis of New York-based AIG, which got a bailout of $182.3 billion from U.S. taxpayers. The appeals court said the trial judge at the time, Christopher Droney, erroneously let prosecutors show jurors three charts with AIG stock-price data. Droney has since joined the appeals court.

Droney also erred by improperly instructing the jury on causation, according to the appeals court opinion.

He had sentenced Milton to four years in prison, Ferguson to two years, Monrad to 18 months, and Garand and Graham each to one year. They are free on bail pending appeal. Two General Re executives who pleaded guilty testified as prosecution witnesses and were sentenced to probation.

Bryant’s order set a schedule for prosecutors and defense lawyers, including a pretrial conference on Dec. 3 and jury selection on Jan. 3.

The case is U.S. v. Ferguson Replica parmigiani watches, 08-6211 Replica breitling watches, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (New York).

MANILA, Philippines – Action star Robin Padilla said he is willing to do kissing scenes with his former flame Kris Aquino in their upcoming series “Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw”.

(Updates with editor’s comment in fourth paragraph.)

Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) — Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. will begin a Sunday edition of British tabloid the Sun this weekend, seven months after shutting another Sunday newspaper rocked by a phone-hacking scandal.

News International, the company’s U.K. publishing arm, plans to publish the Sun on Sunday on Feb. 26, spokeswoman Daisy Dunlop said by telephone. The Sun’s editor, Dominic Mohan, will also be in charge of the Sunday edition.

Murdoch’s announcement may soothe anger in the newsroom after the company’s Management and Standards Committee, formed by News Corp. to assist police in their investigations of phone- hacking and bribery, handed over information to police. It may also spark more clashes with U.K. politicians, with Murdoch announcing the decision before legislators publish a report into why News Corp. executives didn’t stop illegal activities.

“The Sun’s future can now be reshaped as a unique, seven- day proposition in both print and digital,” Mohan said in a statement in the Sun today. “Our readers’ reaction to the announcement of a seventh-day Sun has been huge and we won’t let them down.”

News Corp. has “made clear its determination to sort out what has gone wrong in the past and we are fundamentally changing how we operate as a business,” News International Chief Executive Officer Tom Mockridge said in an e-mail to employees yesterday. Murdoch will stay in London to oversee the start of the Sunday newspaper, Mockridge said.

‘Unwavering Support’

During a visit to the Sun’s newsroom on Feb. 17, Murdoch, News Corp.’s chairman and CEO Replica Breitling watches, said he will stay in London for several weeks to give his staff “unwavering support.” He spent two hours talking to journalists on the newsroom floor with son Lachlan, said a person familiar with the matter. James Murdoch, the former CEO of News International and now deputy chief operating officer of New York-based News Corp., didn’t fly to London because he had other commitments, the person said.

The News of the World was the best-selling Sunday paper in Britain when it was closed last July and its readers have dispersed to competing tabloids or stopped buying Sunday papers altogether. Its circulation reached 2.66 million in May 2011, more than twice its closest competitor in the national Sunday market, the Sunday Mirror, according to media researcher ABC.

The Sun had an 8.7 percent lift in circulation in January as News Corp. sold an average of 2.75 million issues of the tabloid a day, up from 2.53 million a month earlier. Overall daily newspaper sales rose 3 percent, according to the report.

Ethics

The Sun, whose coverage includes celebrity news and soccer, is still selling fewer copies than a year ago as the industry grapples with readership and advertising declines.

Maurice Levy, CEO of the world’s third-biggest advertising company Publicis Groupe SA, said last year that News Corp. may quickly regain advertisers if the company creates “a new News of the World with much more ethical behavior.”

The closing of the News of the World was “just cynical,” said Chris Bryant, a lawmaker from the opposition Labour Party, who had sued the News of the World over phone-hacking. Tom Watson, the lawmaker who is helping prepare the report into News Corp. executives, said “this will not draw a line under the crisis faced by News Corp. in the U.K.”

Lawmaker Probe

Following the News of the World’s closure, Murdoch and his son James had to appear before Parliament to explain how much they knew.

In his testimony on July 19, Rupert Murdoch told lawmakers that this is “the most humble day of my life.” He added that he may have “lost sight” of the paper because it was “so small in the general frame of the company.”

The police investigation ultimately widened beyond the News of the World to News Corp.’s other U.K. titles including the Sun and the Times.

The U.K. lawmakers probing whether News Corp. covered up phone hacking are at least two months behind schedule with their report, as they debate how critical they can be of James Murdoch, two people with knowledge of the panel’s discussions said last week.

Calling on employees to “seize the opportunity to pull together and deliver a great new dawn for the Sun on Sunday,” Mockridge said the “commitment of News Corporation to invest in a new edition is the strongest possible message of support we could wish for.”

Bloomberg LP, the parent of Bloomberg News, competes with News Corp. units in providing financial news and information.

Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) — Options traders are paying the most in 16 months to protect against losses for Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. as the drugmaker faces increased competition once the patent for its top-selling treatment expires.

Three-month put contracts to sell Teva’s American depositary receipts cost 30 percent more than calls to buy them on Jan. 13, the biggest so-called skew since Sept. 24, 2010, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Israel’s benchmark TA- 25 Index fell 0.2 percent to 1,131.30 at the close in Tel Aviv. The Bloomberg Israel-US 25 Index of the largest Israeli companies traded in New York advanced 0.5 percent at 9:55 a.m. in New York.

The median analyst estimate for Teva’s 2012 earnings has been cut to $5.61 per American depositary receipt, from $5.79 at the end of August. Investors are concerned competitors will erode the company’s market share as the patent for its multiple sclerosis injection Copaxone expires in two years. Sales of the treatment, which accounted for 24 percent of revenue in the third quarter, will probably peak this year at $3.8 billion, Teva said on Dec. 21. Sales were $3.32 billion in 2010.

“For Teva, Copaxone was like winning the lottery — they stumbled upon a huge blockbuster,” said Gilad Alper, an analyst at Excellence Nessuah Investment House Ltd. in Ramat Gan, Israel. “Investors need to ask themselves what are the chances that Teva will win the lottery twice in a row. Teva has to be extremely successful to substitute Copaxone.”

The ratio of outstanding puts to call options on shares of the world’s largest maker of generic drugs rose to a four-month high of 0.76-to-1 on Jan. 12, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Teva’s Tel Aviv shares dropped 0.8 percent to 171 shekels, or the equivalent of $44.86. The New York shares climbed 0.1 percent to $44.92.

Petach Tikva, Israel-based Teva said yesterday that a problem found with its Allopurinol gout treatment product in Hong Kong was a “single incident” in only one batch of many Replica Breitling watches, according to an e-mailed statement. The defects were found after the drug, used to treat high levels of uric acid in the body, was analyzed at its plant in Hungary, the company said.

“There is clear concern among investors over the slowing industry growth,” of generic drugs, Randall Stanicky, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity Corp. in New York, wrote in an e- mailed report yesterday.

Check Point Earnings

Investors use options to guard against fluctuations in the price of securities that they own, to speculate on share-price moves or to bet that volatility, or stock swings, will rise or fall.

Three-month puts to sell Teva’s ADRs cost 29 percent more than calls to buy them yesterday.

Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. gained the most in six months yesterday, rising 7.8 percent to $54.88 in the second-biggest advance on the Bloomberg Israel-US 25 index after Prolor Biotech Inc.’s 11 percent jump.

The world’s second largest maker of network-security equipment, Check Point reported fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of 84 cents per shares, beating the 81-cent median estimate of 25 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Profit increased to $159.8 million from $137.4 million in the year-earlier period, and revenue rose 12 percent to $356.8 million, the company said in a statement published by Marketwire.

Hack Attack

Tel Aviv-based Check Point, whose customers include Hewlett-Packard Co., International Business Machines Corp. and Dell Inc., is benefiting from rising demand for corporate security spending. Websites operated by the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, El Al Israel Airlines Ltd., and First International Bank Ltd. were attacked yesterday by Internet hackers.

New Delhi, Jan 23 (IANS) Expressing concern over the growing number of fashion weeks, designer Rahul Mishra, who is known for his contribution to Indian handlooms and has featured in a National Geographic documentary, says most of them lack substance and have only entertainment value.

Instead, he advocates the maximum number of participants in a minimum of fashion weeks so that the desigers can remain focused.

“India has seen a tremendous growth in terms of fashion market in the last 10-15 years and (the major) fashion weeks have played an immense role in this success story. No one can deny the importance of (the major) fashion weeks in any context. But I feel there are too many fashion weeks happening in India today and unfortunately most of them have just entertainment value and lack substance,” the 31-year-old told IANS.

The designer started his journey with Lakme Fashion Week in 2006. Since then, he has successfully showcased his collection at several fashion galas, including the bi-annual Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week organised by the Fashion Development Council of India (FDCI).

Apart from these two major events Replica Omega watches, India, in the past few years, has witnessed a sudden rise in fashion weeks, what with the Chennai Fashion Week, the Bangalore Fashion Week, the Hyderabad Fashion Week, the Kolkata Fashion Week, the India International Fashion Week, the Jaipur Fashion Week, the Pune Fashion Week, the India International Jewellery Week and this year, the India Resost Fashion Week and India Kids Fashion Week.

On one hand, he is unhappy with many fashion weeks happening in different parts of India and on the other hand he feels the fashion industry is completely dependent on the major fashion weeks so these need to be strengthened with greater participation.

“I am a find of the Lakme Fashion Week. I am completely aware of the importance of the (major) fashion weeks in India. The Indian fashion industry is completely dependent on the fashion weeks…fashion weeks are also our window for the rest of the world. That’s why I feel it is very essential for all of us to make fashion weeks stronger by participation to the best of our capabilities Replica Breitling watches,” he added.

Mishra is known for his contribution to Indian handloom textiles. Recently, a documentary film on handlooms of India, made for National Geographic profiled his philosophy and work.

This documentary, made in collaboration with Unesco and the ministry of textiles, explores the rich world of India’s weavers and their magical creations through the eyes of Mishra as he is dedicated to the cause of exploring Indian weaves in the world of high fashion.

He feels Indian handlooms are not given due recognition in the country.

“India is a vast country and the handloom-dependent population in our country is massive. The condition of craftsmen and weavers is India is not very good. The handloom consumption has been on decline but it is poised for growth in the luxury segment. That is the way forward.

“We cannot keep placing handloom fabrics to compete with mass produced Chinese imports. With proper design intervention, I am trying to create a sustainable system to create a market for handlooms,” he said.

Mumbai-based Mishra recently launched his ‘Jaama’ Indian wear collection in the capital at multi-designer store Ogaan.

“I was planning the collection for a long time. The Indian market is flooded with Indian outfits and I wanted to create a very unique look. So it took a lot of research and weaving exploration to be able to conceive it. The collection signifies the attire of great Mughals and is inspired by the opulent domes of the Islamic art and architecture,” he said while explaining the concept behind the collection.

Next on his agenda is an accessories line.

“I am extending my brand into accessories like handbags. I will be doing a very high quality bespoke limited edition range. I am also working on a few collaborations with big corporates. I am also working on idea of creating a very affordable premium mass brand. We will be working on reviving more crafts from different parts of India in coming season,” he said.

Spider-Man Producers File Suit Against Taymor

Producers behind Broadway’s Spider-man musical have filed a counter-suit against Julie Taymor accusing the director of putting together a sub-standard show.

The Across the Universe helmer exited Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark last March (11), following numerous problems including accidents, delays and spiralling budget costs, while show bosses brought the curtain down to make a series of re-writes before relaunching a new version of the beleaguered production.

Taymor subsequently filed an arbitration claim against producers, alleging she had not been fully paid for her work, and she also filed a lawsuit accusing show bosses of violating her creative rights by continuing the show without paying her compensation.

However, producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah Harris have now filed a counter-suit against Taymor – alleging she put together a “dark”, “disjointed” and “hallucinogenic” production and refused to help make changes when it became clear the show was in trouble.

The legal papers state, “Taymor refused to develop a musical that followed the original, family-friendly Spider-Man story, which was depicted in the Marvel comic books and the hugely successful motion picture trilogy based on them… Instead, Taymor, who admits that she was not a fan of the Spider-Man story prior to her involvement with the musical, insisted on developing a dark, disjointed and hallucinogenic musical involving suicide, sex and death.”

In the documents, the producers also claim Taymor “caused numerous delays, drove up costs and failed to direct a musical about Spider-Man which could open on Broadway”.

Taymor’s attorney Charles Spada has called the claims in the counter-suit “baseless” and accuses producers of attempting to “besmirch (Taymor’s) reputation”.
