When asked without prompting to name the living man and woman whom they most admire in the world, more Americans name Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton than any other figures.

The Gallup rankings, tallied from a nationwide poll conducted earlier this month, show Obama and Clinton each receiving 17 percent of all mentions.  

Clinton tops the list of most admired woman for a record 16th time, trailed by Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Sarah Palin and Condoleezza Rice.

Obama won the title of most admired man for the fourth consecutive year, followed by George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, the Rev. Billy Graham and Warren Buffett.

The lists, which Gallup has compiled nearly every year since 1948, are a mix of popular Replica omega watches, high-profile leaders in politics, business, charitable causes and entertainment.

Of particular note this year, according to Gallup, are newcomers to the men’s list: Buffett and Thomas Monson, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Feb. 29 (Bloomberg) — The Central Bank of Cyprus is prepared to support Cypriot banks hurt by Greek debt writedowns, central bank Governor Athanasios Orphanides said.

“The central bank in cooperation with the finance minister has elaborated a plan to support banks so that in case a bank should need support, the state will be ready to provide assistance,” Orphanides, who is also member of the European Central Bank’s governing council, told reporters in Nicosia today. “The central bank has full faith in the banking system and there is no reason for scaremongering or concern.”

Recapitalization plans submitted to the central bank by Bank of Cyprus, the island’s largest lender Replica graham watches, and Marfin Popular Bank Replica omega watches, the second biggest, were examined and considered “satisfactory,” Orphanides said. Bank of Cyprus will need 400 million euros ($536 million) and Marfin 1.35 billion euros to bring their Core 1 capital ratio to 9 percent, he added.

The profitability of Cypriot banks “was better compared to what was expected,” Orphanides said. Bank of Cyprus and Marfin posted losses of 1 billion euros and 3.3 billion euros respectively for 2011. Hellenic Bank, the third-largest lender, had a loss of 100 million euros.

Finance Minister Kikis Kazamias said that while the financial situation of Cypriot banks “is manageable,” lenders should implement their recapitalization plans by “exhausting all opportunities available to raise required capital from the private sector.”

The banks should start first with their existing shareholders and then try to attract new investors, he said.

Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) — Former Yahoo Inc. and Warner Bros. Chairman Terry Semel joined the board of SnagFilms Inc., adding Hollywood and Silicon Valley buzz to the startup distributor of movies online and to cable providers such as Comcast Corp.

Semel also made an investment in SnagFilms, according to Rick Allen, chief executive officer of company, which has offices in Washington, New York and Los Angeles. In an interview, he declined to disclose the amount.

Semel will add expertise in Web distribution and filmmaking, Allen said. SnagFilms, owner of rights to more than 3,000 feature films and documentaries, offers free viewing of some titles on its website and also sells and rents pictures to consumers through websites including Netflix Inc., Apple Inc.’s iTunes and Vudu Inc., and through pay-per-view on cable.

“I know of no other individual who has, at the highest levels of the industry, led a major studio and one of the biggest Web companies,” Allen said.

Semel has already introduced SnagFilms executives to filmmakers interested in the company’s distribution model Breitling replica watches, Allen said. The company, founded in 2008, shares with filmmakers revenue generated by pay-television sales and from advertising on its free site, Allen said.

The designer started his journey with Lakme Fashion Week in 2006. Since then, he has successfully showcased his collection at several fashion galas, including the bi-annual Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week organised by the Fashion Development Council of India (FDCI).

“We cannot keep placing handloom fabrics to compete with mass produced Chinese imports. With proper design intervention, I am trying to create a sustainable system to create a market for handlooms,” he said.

Mumbai-based Mishra recently launched his ‘Jaama’ Indian wear collection in the capital at multi-designer store Ogaan.

“I was planning the collection for a long time. The Indian market is flooded with Indian outfits and I wanted to create a very unique look. So it took a lot of research and weaving exploration to be able to conceive it. The collection signifies the attire of great Mughals and is inspired by the opulent domes of the Islamic art and architecture,” he said while explaining the concept behind the collection.

Next on his agenda is an accessories line.

“I am extending my brand into accessories like handbags. I will be doing a very high quality bespoke limited edition range. I am also working on a few collaborations with big corporates. I am also working on idea of creating a very affordable premium mass brand. We will be working on reviving more crafts from different parts of India in coming season,” he said.

Jan. 17 (Bloomberg) — The American Folk Art Museum can survive in a storefront on New York’s Upper West Side, its volunteer president said today, buoyed by more than $3.5 million in contributions and pledges since it sold its main building to the Museum of Modern Art.

“We’re committed to operating on a break-even basis for the indefinite future,” said Monty Blanchard, a former Merrill Lynch & Co. investment banker, speaking at a news conference. “Our future is reasonably secure.”

The museum sold its West 53rd Street building to MoMA for $31.2 million last year after missing $3.7 million in debt- service payments. The 50-year-old museum now operates in a space of less than 5,000 square feet that it has used as an outpost since 1989.

“The plus side of selling our building is that we are debt-free,” said Linda Dunne Replica Rolex watches, the museum’s acting director. All contributions go to programming, not to servicing or repaying debt, she said, adding that the staff is 18, down from a peak of 57 a few years ago.

“Considering what was hanging over our heads, this gives us the chance to start new, without the monster facilities costs,” she said.

Stacy Hollander, senior curator, has assembled 100 pieces from the museum’s 5,000-work collection in a dense new exhibition called “Jubilation/Rumination: Life, Real and Imagined.” It includes Henry Darger Replica Omega watches, Martin Ramirez and other big names of folk art.

The philanthropist Joyce Berger Cowin recently pledged $2 million to the museum, Blanchard said, and trustees and others gave about $1 million.

Dunne is confident that the museum will gain ownership of hundreds of works promised by Ralph Esmerian, a former chairman and jeweler who was sentenced last year to six years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud. The fate of the works is being decided by U.S. bankruptcy court, she said.

In taking over the board, Blanchard replaces Laura Parsons, the wife of the chairman of Citigroup Inc. Since Maria Ann Conelli resigned last year as executive director, the museum has sought a permanent full-time leader. Dunne said she doesn’t want the job.

“The day-to-day management of the institution falls to me,” Dunne said. “I’m a nuts-and-bolts gal. My heart really isn’t in fundraising.”
